Oh Brave New World

Well, let's try this blogging thing again. Here goes.
---
You should never expect perfect days to be handed to you on a platter. Sometimes, you've got to go out looking for them, and sometimes they surprise you; but they never jump out and say, "Hey! Get ready! I'm a perfect day!"
It's a day like that today. The wind's coming off the lake, and an old russian man (maybe he's polish) and a black woman (whose sons proudly tell the old man, "40! She's 40!" after he asks how old she is) converse, his broken english communicating just as well as her glowing smile. She then seems to be caught in an awkward situation, not knowing what to say now that the pleasentries have been dispensed (I say dispensed, although the inevitable likening to medicine that some may pursue is not what I'm trying to convey here); she says goodbye a few times, hoping he gets the idea. But instead of a look of sadness at the parting (they hadn't seen each other in a year), he smiles, and as she runs after her kids says, "Have a good, a... a... good..."
"Day!" One of the kids shouts back.
"A good evening!"
And, still smiling, and almost as an afterthought, "And a good life!"
"A wonderful life!," she says as she turns her head for one last brief smile, and then runs off to catch her children.
She doesn't hear him, but I do, when he says, "Da. Oovereno."
Later, the curtains of rain over Lake Michigan are getting further away now, and a few storm clouds are gathering.
It's days like today that make you wonder why people, myself included, get so caught up in daily crap that they never have time to enjoy stuff like this. It's why I quit working last summer, so I could enjoy things like this.
Changing the subject:
I don't think I'd ever want a laptop. It'd ruin that separation that exists between recreation and work. I'm sure it might break some of the drudgery or work, but then again, when I took a break it wouldn't be as much of a break; I'd see the same stuff I would see when I was working, sans work... And that just seems to destroy the balance. Also, I have a problem with the way culture is oriented towards working all the time. Granted, I get sucked into it as well, but I'm trying to break myself of the habit. We'll see.
